Energy consumption efficiency is the key to our quest for environmentally responsible ideas and practices. In fact, every year we produce over 515 GWh of electricity from renewable resources. That equates to taking 111,000 cars off the road. We aim to make significant savings in these four areas:
Several of our Queensland mills have significantly reduced their water use. As an example, investing in recycling plants has cut our local water intake and output by 50 percent. A ‘screen and filter’ system re-uses waste water, saving around 30 million litres every year.
Using recyclable plastic for our sugar syrup packs and moving from three-ply to two-ply industrial sugar bags, means we’re lowering materials consumption and waste disposal across our Australian and New Zealand operations.
To increase our production of renewable energy, we’re planning to expand our cogeneration operations. Cogeneration projects are a triple winner: they reduce waste, offset fossil fuel emissions and create financial value.
Our fuel ethanol is a renewable product, a by-product of sugar milling. We also produce biologically rich BioDunder™ fertiliser by recycling waste by-product and selling it to local sugarcane farmers.
