Maximum output, minimum environmental impact
Environment
When we say what we do is ‘better for all’, we mean that we do everything we can to minimise our impact on the environment, both in terms of the materials we use and what we leave behind. We care for and protect each other, our business and our environment, with the vision to pursue the full potential of sugar as a renewable resource, energetically and sustainably. Our approach to safety is guided by our Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Policy.
Nothing wasted
We re-use and optimise almost all the by-products from our manufacturing processes. Here’s how:
- Our sugar mills create molasses, which is used to make ethanol and is also sold as stockfeed.
- We generate electricity from cogeneration at our seven sugar mills. In fact, we're Australia’s largest renewable energy generator from biomass, with a total cogeneration capacity of 197 megawatts.
- We produce fertiliser using by-products from our sugar milling and ethanol distillation processes.
- Sucrogen is Australia’s largest producer of sugar-based ethanol, which is used as an additive in fuel and for a range of industrial purposes.
Measuring our footprint
To make sure we’re doing the right thing when it comes to environmentally responsible products and services, we regularly measure our performance in energy consumption and CO₂(greenhouse gas) emissions.
To find out more about our environmental credentials, have a look at the Sucrogen overview in the CSR Limited Sustainability Report 2010. From 2011, we will report on our environmental performance in our own right.
